In the run-up to Christmas a couple of years ago I spotted a gorgeous dried leaf wreath in the homewares section of a lifestyle brand. It was stunning, different and I fell in love with it immediately. However it didn’t come home with me that day because, as is my habit, I thought '“I can make that.” And sure enough I did. The next day I headed to Hong Kong’s flower market and went crazy buying assorted dried flowers, leaves, seeds, wooden bit and pieces and thick velvet ribbons. My goal was simple - to make a wreath that was beautiful, stylish and different, and would last more than one year. I made 2 wreaths - hung one on my front door and the other above a large mirror in my house. I loved them. They made me think of cold British winters & elegant fireplaces (I don’t have one and wreaths and bar heaters don’t mix but they made me feel warm and cozy all the same!). As the New Year came I decided to store the wreaths in boxes to see how well they could last and as Autumn came around again I was happy to see that they had lasted well (the caveat here being that they were stored in a humidity free environment). So the following year I decided to create and sell around 30 wreaths of different shapes, colour combinations and sizes. My dining table became my factory floor and effectively disappeared under a sea of dried plants for a couple of months almost until the turkey came out of the oven on Christmas Day. Although my original 2 wreaths are still keeping well and shall be gracing my flat again this winter, I may yet be tempted to get the hot glue gun out once more.
